National Football League (NFL): History, Teams, and Season Format
The National Football League (NFL) is the premier professional American football league in the United States and the most popular sports league in the country. Founded in 1920, the league currently features 32 teams divided equally between two conferences: the American Football Conference (AFC) and the National Football Conference (NFC).
The NFL is the highest level of professional American football in the world, attracting millions of fans each season across the United States and internationally.
History of the NFL
The league was created in 1920 as the American Professional Football Association (APFA). Two years later, in 1922, it was renamed the National Football League.
For many years, the league champion was decided by regular-season standings. In 1933, the NFL introduced a playoff championship game to determine the league winner.
A major turning point came when the NFL agreed to merge with the rival American Football League in the late 1960s. This led to the creation of the Super Bowl in 1967, which remains the championship game of the league today.
NFL Teams and Conferences
The NFL consists of 32 teams, split into two conferences:

NFL Draft
The NFL Draft is held every April and serves as the primary way teams add new talent from college football. The draft consists of seven rounds, with each of the 32 teams receiving one pick in every round. The order is determined mainly by the previous season’s results-teams with the worst records select first, while the champion of the Super Bowl picks last. Players must be at least three years removed from high school to be eligible. Teams may also trade draft picks with other clubs, and additional compensatory picks are sometimes awarded to teams that lost key free agents. Once selected, players negotiate contracts only with the team that drafted them, usually signing four-year deals with a potential fifth-year option for first-round picks.
NFL Season Format
An NFL season follows a structured calendar:
Preseason
The preseason begins in August and lasts about three weeks. These exhibition games allow teams to evaluate players and prepare for the regular season.
Regular Season
The regular season runs from early September through early January. Each team plays 17 games over 18 weeks, including one bye week.
Games are mainly played on:
- Sundays
- Monday Night Football
- Thursday Night Football
NFL Playoffs
After the regular season, 14 teams qualify for the playoffs – seven from each conference. These include:
- Four division champions
- Three wild card teams
The playoffs follow a single-elimination format. Winners advance through the Wild Card Round, Divisional Round, and Conference Championships.
The AFC champion and NFC champion then face off in the Super Bowl, the biggest game of the NFL season.
Super Bowl and Championships
The Super Bowl is one of the most-watched sporting events in the world. The winning team receives the famous Vince Lombardi Trophy.
Historically, the Green Bay Packers hold the most overall NFL championships with 13 titles. In the Super Bowl era, the New England Patriots and the Pittsburgh Steelers are tied with the most Super Bowl wins, each with six.
NFL Popularity and Media Coverage
The NFL is the wealthiest professional sports league in the world by revenue and consistently attracts the largest television audiences in the United States. Games are broadcast across major networks, including CBS, Fox, NBC, ESPN/ABC, and streaming services such as Prime Video.
Millions of fans watch games every week during the season, making the NFL the most popular sports league in America.
